Choosing an espresso machine for a café is less about brand prestige and more about matching capacity, workflow, and utilities to your real daily volume. Use this guide to shortlist machines before you request a quote — listed prices on our site are planning references only.
Start with volume, not the brochure
Estimate peak drinks per hour on your busiest day, not average day. A quiet neighborhood café may run comfortably on a well-built 1–2 group machine; a transit or office corridor location often needs a 2–3 group multi-boiler system with strong steam capacity. Build headroom for seasonal spikes and catering, then choose the smallest machine that still clears peak without constant recovery waits.
Browse commercial espresso machines for multi-group café systems, or espresso machines if you are comparing prosumer and lighter-duty options side by side.
Group heads and boiler layout
Group count drives throughput: each group can pull shots in parallel, which matters when espresso and milk drinks stack up. Boiler design matters next. Dual-boiler and multi-boiler machines keep brew and steam more independent under load; heat-exchange designs can work well at moderate volume if you understand flush and temperature management. Saturated groups and stable temperature control help consistency when multiple baristas share the bar. For a step-by-step sizing guide, see 1, 2 or 3 group espresso machine: how to choose. For a deeper comparison, see heat exchanger vs dual boiler espresso machines.
Power, water, and counter reality
Confirm voltage (often 220–240V, sometimes three-phase for larger commercial units), amperage, and whether the machine is plumbed or tank-fed. Measure counter depth, drip tray clearance, and cup rail height against your cups and knock box. Plumbing and drain placement should be planned with your millworker or plumber before delivery — relocating a plumbed machine later is expensive.
Budget the whole bar, not only the machine
A capable machine without a matching grinder and water treatment underperforms. Plan for an on-demand commercial grinder, filtration sized to your water chemistry, knock box, tampers, pitchers, cleaning supplies, and spare portafilters. Water quality protects boilers and improves taste; ignore it and you pay in scale, taste complaints, and service calls.
Practical shortlist checklist
- Peak drinks/hour and number of baristas on bar at once
- Group count (1, 2, or 3) and preferred boiler architecture
- Available power, water line, and drain
- Counter footprint and cup storage above the machine
- Grinder pairing and filtration plan
- Service access and spare-parts lead times in your region
How we quote equipment
All Coffee & Coffee Machines Inc runs an inquire/quote storefront — there is no online checkout. When you are ready, shortlist models from our commercial and espresso categories, add them to your inquiry list, or open a formal quote request. We confirm configuration options, voltage, availability, and shipping after we review your volume and site details.
Steam capacity and milk drinks
If flat whites, cappuccinos, and lattes dominate your menu, steam performance matters as much as shot quality. Watch for cool-touch wands, lever vs knob controls your staff already know, and how quickly the machine recovers after three milk drinks in a row. Ask for a demo or peer reference when possible, and describe your milk-drink percentage when you inquire so we can flag under-powered options.
Volumetric vs manual actuation
Volumetric dosing helps newer baristas hit similar shot times; paddle or manual actuation gives experienced teams more feel. Neither choice replaces training. Decide based on staffing stability and how standardized you want recipes across shifts.
Compare before you inquire
Open two or three product pages, note group count, power, and water notes, and add them to one inquiry list. That gives us a clear comparison set. Avoid sending ten loosely related SKUs without volume context — tighter shortlists get faster, more useful quotes.
Next: choose a commercial grinder and use the quote checklist.
