About Ethiopian Arabica

Ethiopia is widely regarded as the birthplace of Arabica coffee, and coffee still grows there in a wide range of local heirloom varieties. Its best-known growing regions include:

  • Yirgacheffe and Sidamo (Sidama) in the south, known for bright, floral and citrus-toned coffees
  • Guji, also in the south
  • Harrar in the eastern highlands, traditionally sun-dried (natural) coffee
  • Limu in the west

Ethiopian coffee is produced both washed (the fruit is removed and the beans fermented and washed before drying) and natural (whole cherries are dried in the sun before hulling). Washed lots tend to taste cleaner and brighter; naturals tend to be fruitier and heavier in body. Ethiopia is landlocked, so most of its coffee exports travel by road and rail to the Port of Djibouti for loading. Tell us the region, processing method and quantity you are looking for and we will confirm what is currently available.
